Motorbike racing began at the track in , and three years later it held its first grand prix. It was part of the original world championship calendar in , but even for its time the kilometre long circuit was fearsomely fast and dangerous. Two drivers were killed in a single weekend in , Chris Bristow and Alan Stacey perishing in separate accidents, while two others suffered major crashes. By growing concerns over the frequency of serious accidents led to the circuit being removed from the calendar — Zolder and Nivells held the Belgian Grand Prix in the meantime. Spa was restored in having been shortened, but while dramatic corners such as the Masta Kink and Burnenville had been lost other famous bends including Eau Rouge and Blanchimont remained. The new configuration also added new high-speed turns which complemented the circuit perfectly, including the tricky downhill double-left at Pouhon. Spa-Francorchamps has been the home of the Belgian Grand Prix since , although that year the race was postponed from its original date when a newly-laid track surface broke up badly. The impetus for ever higher safety standards has led to further changes since then. Yet it remains one of the most dramatic and exciting venues on the calendar.

Aviation and engineering Craner Curves – Donington Park Donington Park is the only circuit in the UK which existed before the second world war and is still operational today, albeit with a bit of a break in between. Bike races were held on the estate’s roads from before Fred Craner, then secretary of the Derby and District Motor Club and a former motorcycle racer laid a permanent track which opened in It ended a monopoly held by Brooklands since and our corner subject here bears Craner’s name as tribute.
Like so much else, the track’s future was soon curtailed by the conflict of ‘ which turned Donington into a military car park, thereafter lying dormant until local hero Tom Wheatcroft bought the estate in the early ’70s. He realised a lifelong dream when the track reopened to host the Nottingham Sports Car Club’s meeting in May Donington is a firm favourite with most drivers and for the same reason as Spa, Brands Grand Prix and Oulton Park; the road winds across hilly ground which means the corners can confuse the car as well as a driver who can’t see the exit.
The Craners are hillier than most and the dive downhill turns a minor bend into a major challenge, much as it does for Raidillon at Spa; how fast you take either depends on what you are driving and how much grip it can generate. For all but the most aero-equipped, the trap is always carrying too much speed through the Craners and messing up the Old Hairpin which lies in the dip below. Back in the late ’80s, I travelled most of the way from Craner entry to Old Hairpin without any of my Toyota Corolla’s wheels touching the road.
If you put the car in the right place, the Craners were just about flat in a 1.

Ford backed Cosworth with creating a new interim design for IndyCar racing in the late s, the DFS, which merged DFR technology into the ageing DFX design, but it was eventually rendered obsolete by advancing technology. While designed as an F1 engine, the DFV was also used as in endurance racing, although its flat-plane crank design led to destructive vibrations putting stress on devices surrounding the engine, especially the exhaust system.
